Why is this important?
Historic Highway 49, the Golden Chain Highway, winds through Tuolumne
County connecting us to other Mother Lode communities. Much of Yosemite
National Park is within our boundaries. These attractions and many
more, draw a steady stream of visitors who enjoy discovering the
various aspects of our history and culture.
What is the measure?
We provide attendance records for several museums, noting that only
those who sign the registers are counted.
Mother’s Day weekend features the annual Mother Lode Roundup
and Rodeo which draws participants from well beyond our county borders.
We delineate attendance at two State Historic Parks: (1) Railtown
l897 State Historic Park that features rides, a roundhouse, and trains,
and (2) Columbia State Historic Park, a preserved Gold Rush town
that offers many interpretive exhibits, living history and year-round
activities and events.
Tuolumne County’s abundance of historic buildings and places
is documented by numerous plaques and monuments that mark significant
historical locations.
How are we doing?
Attendance at our museums reflects mixed participation, with the
majority of attendees being from out-of-town. Volunteer register
sign-ins indicate decreased attendance at the County Museum, and
growth at the others.
Historic Park attendance is decreasing, although Columbia State
Historic Park recovered some of its audience in 2007. Inclement weather
may be the cause of low participation in the 2005 Rodeo.
