Why is this important?
Efforts to promote cultural tourism begin with preservation of
historic as well as other unique assets of the area.
California's rich Gold Rush history surrounds us and is
a vital part of our lives. Many residents live in historic communities
or have livelihoods dependent on tourism associated with the Gold
Country. The Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park,
with thousands of acres in the county, have heritage sites maintained
and interpreted by the U.S. Forest Service and the National Park
Service.
Historic buildings and heritage sites are valuable for the past
that they represent and for education and recreational opportunities
available to local residents and to our many visitors. Countless
individuals identify with this heritage and are committed to preserving
knowledge and evidence of times past.
What is the measure?
Some property owners listed their buildings on historic registers.
Others have taken advantage of the Mills Act,26 a property tax
reduction program. We also delineate the number of buildings more
than 50 years old that are demolished.
How are we doing?
Nine of Tuolumne County's historic communities have Cultural
Resources Surveys completed. Local land use planning has historic
preservation goals and implementation measures designed to encourage
the continued presence of our heritage resources and their rural
settings.
The Historic Preservation Review Commission, tribal committees
and citizens' groups advocate for historic preservation.
Many buildings that would qualify for historic designation are
yet to be inventoried or listed.
