Why is it important?

Transportation in rural communities helps sustain social, economic and recreational activities. Properly developed, balanced transportation systems result in effective mobility and safe living conditions.

What is the measure?

We surveyed major modes of transportation – road and air. The County’s Department of Public Works rates the conditions of the 611 miles of roads under its jurisdiction.

How are we doing?

Our transportation system includes a fixed-route and dial-a-ride transit system, pedestrian and off-road bicycle facilities, a railroad, two public use airports and a network of County roads and State Highways 132, 49, 108 and 120.

The data illustrate the current and anticipated decline in the condition of the County maintained roadways due to limited financial resources. Currently 72% of the County’s road fund is allocated for road maintenance, such as snow plowing and emergency repairs. No funds are allocated for major repairs, such as resurfacing.

The 49-mile long Sierra Railroad operates between Standard in Tuolumne County and Oakdale in Stanislaus County, where it connects with the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe Railroads. The Sierra Railroad transports goods and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown provides excursions.

General aviation needs are provided by two County-owned and operated airports in Columbia and Pine Mountain Lake. The CalFire Columbia Air Attack Base is located at the Columbia Airport.
