What is our population like?
In July 2007, the county’s population
grew to an estimated 56,910.2 This continues
the pattern of slower growth rates each year
since the spike of 1.47% in 2001.
The negative balance of 497 births and 620
deaths resulted in a natural decrease of 123
persons. Natural decrease is somewhat
offset by a net migration of 151 new residents.
This net migration into the county also significantly
decreased since 2001.3
Tuolumne County’s median age is significantly
higher than California’s. In fact, we
are one of the "grayer" counties,
with 45% of our residents being 50 years old
and older.4

- 83% White
- 10% Hispanic

(averaging 4,120 men) is institutionalized
in Sierra Conservation Center, a state prison
outside of Jamestown.6 These men are included
in the county’s demographic profile.7
The prison ethnic diversity in March 2008
was:
- 31% Hispanic

Public Policy Institute, was 12%. This is a
grouped rate for Amador, Alpine, Calaveras,
Mariposa, Mono and Tuolumne Counties. California's
2005 poverty rate was 13%.
